Vermont Dominates Newport with 11-1 Victory

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont’s six runs in the 1st inning and a two-hit outing by the pitching staff catapulted the Mountaineers to an 11-1 win over the Newport Gulls.

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont's six runs in the 1st inning and a two-hit outing by the pitching staff catapulted the Mountaineers to an 11-1 win over the Newport Gulls.

  • A six-run, twelve-batter inning in the bottom of the 1st inning allowed Vermont to take a 6-0 lead against Newport starter David McSweeney. David Alvarez, JJ Parsons, Rex Hauser, Charlie Niehaus, Sam Winsett and Elliot Miles all registered RBI. 

  • Parsons scorched a two-out double in the 2nd, and Rex Hauser sent him home on a single in the 2nd. 

  • The newly-minted NECBL All-Star starter Alvarez blasted an RBI triple to score Alex Benevento in the 4th to make it 8-0 Vermont.

  • Hank Lippman finished his start for the Mountaineers without allowing a hit in five innings.

  • Bryce Rudisill popped a double in the 6th against reliever John Mass. Niehaus recorded his second sac fly and Parsons scored on a balk.

  • Andrew Gendi allowed a Braxton Tramel RBI double in the 9th, but closed out the game to secure a double-digit win for Vermont.

  • The Mountaineers recorded two extra-base hits on Sunday. Vermont is third in the NECBL with 89 to their name, tied for first in the NECBL in doubles and leads the league in triples.

  • Vermont stole eight bases against the Gulls. They lead the NECBL in that category.

  • Minckler is first in the league for the most stolen bases with 33. He stole two bags against Newport on Sunday and now holds the Vermont single-season franchise record for stolen bases.

  • Minckler scored one run against the Gulls to put him at a fourth-best 27 for the season. 

  • David Alvarez's two hits put him in third place in the NECBL with 37. His two RBI also put him tied for fifth in the league with 23.

  • Alvarez's triple puts him at ten extra-base hits. He and Minckler are two of 13 players in the NECBL with double-digit extra-base knocks.

  • Jackson Hulcher's four strikeouts against North Shore puts him seventh in the league with 33 Ks.

  • Minckler's two triples against the SteepleCats gives him the most in the NECBL. He is also now just one of eleven players in the league with ten or more extra-base hits.

  • Elliot Miles is third in the NECBL with 19 stolen bases. He notched two more bases against the SteepleCats on July 15.

  • Miles' double against North Adams on July 15 makes him one of seven players in the NECBL with eight or more doubles.

  • Brendon Miller's eleven strikeouts against North Adams on July 12 is the most by a Vermont pitcher in a single outing. The Mountaineers' 19 total strikeouts is the most in a single game this season for the team.
