Vermont Comeback Falls Short Against North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Despite Vermont tying the game in the 6th inning, Matthew Colella’s base-clearing RBI double gave the SteepleCats their second win of the summer over the Mountaineers.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.  — Despite Vermont tying the game in the 6th inning, Matthew Colella's base-clearing RBI double gave the SteepleCats their second win of the summer over the Mountaineers.

  • Sebastian Rhoades ripped an RBI single and Tony Woodie popped a sac fly to give North Adams a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning.

  • Jake Butler grounded an RBI single straight up the middle in the bottom of the 5th to add another run for the SteepleCats.

  • Vermont responded with three runs in the 6th inning. David Alvarez placed a two-run RBI single, and Charlie Niehaus brought another runner home on a groundout to tie the contest.

  • Matthew Colella blasted a three-run RBI double in the 8th off Matthew Kahn to give the lead back to North Adams. Owen Arias reached on an error that sent Colella around to make it 7-3 SteepleCats.

  • The Mountaineers tallied one extra-base hit on Monday. Vermont is tied for second in the NECBL with 67 to their name.

  • Vermont stole three bases against the SteepleCats. They led the NECBL in that category.

  • David Alvarez's three hits on Monday puts him in the NECBL lead with 27. His pair of RBI makes him one of nine players with 17 or more runs batted in.

  • Elliot Miles is now tied for third in the NECBL with 14 stolen bases. He notched one more stolen bag against North Adams.

  • Charlie Niehaus and Chase Ecker made their debuts in the Vermont batting order. Ecker went 0-for-3 and Niehaus recorded an RBI groundout. 

  • Jack Pye and Jack Sheldon tossed their first innings for the Mountaineers. Each pitcher struck out one batter and did not allow a run.

  • Alex Benevento scored one run against the Nighthawks on July 4 to put him at a league-high 22 for the season. Benevento's hit against the Navigators on July 2 puts him tied for second in the NECBL with 23.

  • Nick Mullen hit an RBI double in the 6th inning against the Upper Valley Nighthawks. He now leads the NECBL with eight doubles to his name.

  • Evan Hoeckele's six innings on Saturday is the longest outing by any Mountaineers pitcher this summer. 

  • Matthew Minckler is first in the league for the most stolen bases with 17. 

  • Matthew Jackson's triple against Valley makes him the only NECBL player with three in the category this summer.

The Mountaineers play two seven-inning contests at Montpelier Recreation Field against the Keene SwampBats on Tuesday, July 7. Game 1 is at 4 p.m. on NECBL+ while ESPN+ will carry Game 2 which begins 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
