Vermont Drops Contest to Sanford 4-2

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Despite a strong Mountaineers debut from Evan Hoeckele pitching, the Sanford Mainers rallied late to take their second win over Vermont this season.

MONTPELIER, Vt.  — Despite a strong Mountaineers debut from Evan Hoeckele pitching, the Sanford Mainers rallied late to take their second win over Vermont this season.

  • Starting pitcher Evan Hoeckele tossed four strikeouts and allowed only one base-runner via a walk in his Mountaineers debut. 

  • Vermont began the scoring in the bottom of the 4th with Vincent Davis blasting a solo home run in just the second hit of the game. 

  • Sebastian Collender knocked an RBI single to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead after four innings.

  • Sanford responded back with a two-run homer by Domenico Tozzi against Vermont reliever Andrew Tringe.

  • Nater Wachter gave Sanford their first lead with a two-run RBI in the bottom of the 8th inning. 

  • Despite being even on hits with the Mainers, Vermont could not plate another run after their 4th inning scoring.

  • Evan Hoeckele made his Vermont debut. The St. John's product walked one batter and allowed no runs and no hits.

  • The Mountaineers tallied two extra-base hits on Saturday. Vermont is third in the NECBL in the category with 47.

  • Vermont stole two bases against Sanford. The contest pushes their total to 60, good for second in the league.

  • Alex Benevento's double against the SteepleCats on June 24 means the New Canaan, Conn. native is second in the league with 8 extra-base knocks. His run scored in that contest also ties him for second with 18 to his credit.

  • Matthew Minckler is third in the league for the most stolen bases with 11 stolen bags.

  • Nick Mullen hit a double in the 2nd inning against North Adams. He is now tied for second in the NECBL with six to his name.

The Mountaineers will face off against the Upper Valley Nighthawks at Maxfield Sports Complex on Sunday, June 28. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. with NECBL+ streaming all the action.
