Mountaineers Split Doubleheader Series with the Ocean State Waves

MONTPELIER, Vt. – A ten-hit victory and pitcher's duel defeat showcased a tale of two games for Vermont in Sunday's doubleheader.

Game 1 Score: Vermont 10, Ocean State 3

Game 1 Rapid Recap

• Vermont added to their extra-base hitting with two doubles. David Alvarez registered another RBI to send home Kevin Hager and Alex Benevento.

• Samuel Fernandez took one run back in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single.

• Kevin Hager tallied the third double for the Mountaineers in the top of the 2nd inning. Benevento and David Alvarez followed the Cornell product immediately by batting in two more runs. 

• Sam Bradley reached on an error in the 2nd, allowing Alvarez to score. On a failed rundown attempt, Nick Mullen scored the fourth run of the frame. 

• Max Marchetti stepped in for Deering after 1.2 innings. JJ Parsons smacked a two-run RBI before the 2nd wrapped up with Vermont up 8-1.

• Matthew Minckler hit a double in the top of the 3rd before being ruled out due to not stepping on first base.

• Charlie Saul registered a sac fly in the 2nd to cut the lead to six runs.

• Tyler Jones became a pinch runner for Hager in the top of the 6th after he was shaken up on the base path.

• Nick Mullen notched a two-run RBI single in the top of the 6th to go up 10-2.

• The Waves found another score off an RBI double from Brodey Bitove after Hank Lippman replaced Matthew Kahn.

Game 2 Rapid Recap

• Rex Hauser tossed the first four innings for Vermont. The Green Mountain State native allowed three hits, one walk and sat down five batters. Ocean State only had one runner in scoring position with Hauser on the bump. 

• Elliot Miles hit an RBI off of reliever Dylan McCarthy to send Sebastian Collender home in the bottom of the 5th inning for the game's first run. 

• Ocean State took their first lead of the afternoon on a two-run RBI double from Justin Hackett in the 6th inning. Liam Flynn got his first hit of the season to send Hackett home. 

• In Trey Telfer's first inning of work for the Waves, Vermont left the bases loaded to keep the Ocean State lead at 3-1.

• Telfer handled a four-batter bottom of the 7th to take victory for the Waves

• Game 2 - WP: Dylan McCarthy (1-0) , LP: Jackson Hulcher (0-1), SV: Trey Telfer

• After the doubleheader, Vermont has a league-leading 27 extra-base hits.

• Brayden Leonard and David Alvarez hit triples against Bristol. The tandem become 1 of 17 players in the NECBL that have recorded a triple on the season

• Kevin Hager notched another hit in the contest. He is one of five players in the league with eleven or more hits.

• Nick Mullen recorded an RBI in the first game. Vermont's starting third baseman is one of 15 players in the NECBL with six or more RBIs. 

• Vermont stole five bases against the Waves on the afternoon. Their team total is now 34, the most in the league.

• Matthew Kahn tossed 3.2 innings in the first game. The Villanova product tossed three strikeouts after throwing only one combined in his first two outings.

• Rex Hauser completed his longest appearance of the summer. He went four innings plus only giving up three hits and no runs. Jackson Hulcher and Davis Budd also appeared in Game 2.

The Mountaineers are off on Monday before traveling to Fraser Field for their third matchup against the North Shore Navigators on June 16. NECBL+ will carry the broadcast starting at 6:30 p.m.
